No, the Gold Star Marching Band proudly represents more than 50 academic majors across campus. Approximately 80% of our members are non-music majors.
An audition is not required for most wind players. The Drumline holds auditions for part placement on snare, tenor, bass, and cymbals. The Color Guard also holds a basic audition to assess skill level. Regardless of experience, we are committed to working with each student to help them grow and succeed.
No prior field marching experience is required. Many of our members begin with little or no experience on a football field. We hold Band Camp one week prior to the start of classes to teach marching fundamentals and begin learning our halftime productions. Parade marching is also part of our tradition, and all members receive instruction.
Yes! We welcome students from Minnesota State University Moorhead and Concordia College, as neither institution sponsors a marching band. Many students from both colleges have participated in the GSMB. Academic credit may be arranged through the Metro College Alliance program.
Rehearsals are held three times per week — Monday, Wednesday, and Friday — from 4:00 pm to 5:45 pm during the fall semester. Band Camp is held one week prior to the start of classes to teach fundamentals and begin show preparation. Participation in Band Camp also allows members to move into campus housing before the general student move-in period.
The GSMB includes a Color Guard for students who do not wish to play a wind instrument. The Color Guard holds a tryout to assess skill level and provides instruction for members of all experience levels. In prior years, the band has also featured baton twirlers. Additionally, students may participate in the Front Ensemble (pit), performing on mallet percussion and other stationary instruments.
The Gold Star Marching Band typically presents three to four halftime productions each season, covering a wide range of styles including Southern rock, Latin music, movie soundtracks, and popular artists. Past productions have included themed shows such as Guitar Hero and Journey, as well as music by Queen and Panic! at the Disco. We have also collaborated with regional artists for special performances. Visit our YouTube channel to view highlights from recent seasons.
